The Protea, in Flanders Fields
The Protea is located near “Hooge” (higher ground near Ypres) in front of “Herenthage Wood”. The German army advanced till the Chateau grounds during the First Battle of Ypres (1915) when the British troops pull back to Hooge (new frontline at Sanctuary Wood – Hooge).
The frontline comes back to “Herenthage Wood” during the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917 and the British troops advance to Gheluveld during September – October 1917 but it takes September 1918 (the final Allied offensive) to free Gheluveld.
